Abstract:

Overview: Bush camp on the eastern bank of a channel of the Kwando River in the Mayuni Conservancy of the Zambezi Region: Background: Losange Lodges t/a Camp Kwando, was one of the first lodges in the Zambezi Region to open its doors to tourists in 1993. It is situated on the eastern banks of the Kwando River wetland ecosystem north of Mudumu National Park. The Proponent operates and provides a rustic hospitality destination to predominantly the European tourist market at Camp Kwando on the C49, ca. 25km, south of Kongola Following the success of Camp Kwando which operates 14 chalets and 4 tree houses, management decided to close all its camp sites at Camp Kwando as of 2019 and to focus only on B&B. After a Joint Venture agreement with the Mayuni Conservancy and TA of MAFWE, a new exclusive camp site was established by Losange Lodges in the Mayuni Conservancy near Kongola in 2019. This camp site is called Bush Camp which is owned and managed by Camp Kwando (Losange Lodges Pty Ltd). Prior to this "JV agreement" this run down camp site was referred to as Mazambala Camp. Location and infrastructure: Bush Camp is located about 7km west of Kongola under a canopy of palms, riverine forest and woodland trees. Bush Camp is situated on a side channel of the Kwando River as it meanders south to the Linyanti River. The 4 camp sites lie on an elevated vegetated land (ca 967m above sea-level), populated with palm trees, jackal-berry, mangosteen, combretum, terminalia and sausage trees, and surrounded by sedges and reeds along the riverbanks. Bush Camp can be reached by vehicle on the B8 west from Kongola and it is well signed to guide guests to their destination. Bush Camp opened its doors to the public in 2019. Bush Camp offers only 4 exclusive private campsites. Each campsite has its own braai facilities under a thatched roof. Included at each camp site is an ablution block (separate toilet and shower) with braai facilities and electricity under a thatched roof. In summary, Bush Camp includes: 4 x exclusive camp sites; Reception; "Mad Max Bar" with a splash pool and deck; Staff and security quarters; Store facilities; Workshop; Borehole; The shared sundowner deck overlooks the Kwando River wetlands and is named "Mad Max". On the deck a splash pool allows the guests to cool down in safety during the hot spring and summer months. Activities at and from Bush Camp: numerous activities are facilitated at Camp Kwando which include: 4WD self-drive game drives into Mudumu-, Nkasa Rupara- and Bwabwata National Parks (Kwando Core Area), birdwatching, cultural exposure at a village, and fishing (catch and release). A highlight includes a mokoro trip along the narrow channels of the Kwando River followed by a walk through the veld for the keen birder. Coordinates for Bush Camp (reception) are as follows: 17.85000 Latitude South and 23.46111 Longitude East Campers can expect a true wilderness experience where elephants still roam freely. It was observed that the protocols in place for both the solid waste management and grey/black water disposal require revision. It was noted that most of the solid waste generated at Bush Camp is taken out and partly recycled. All grey and black water is collected at 3 sites from where it is pumped 100m away from the channel into a sand pit. More details on the effluent discharge will be provided in the EMP. Staff: Bush Camp employs staff from adjacent villages east of the Kwando River of the Mayuni Conservancy, which includes the following departments/positions: Manager (reception) 1x : Gardeners/camp cleaners 2x: Security 1x Vision of Bush Camp: to provide the guests with a unique camping experience in a well-preserved forested area: to ensure that every guest receives a wildlife experience in an environment that is being managed and operated on eco-friendly principles: the establishment is committed to comply and adhere to all the Policies, Acts and Regulations of MEFT (to be issued an ECC) and MAFWLR (to be issued licenses for water abstraction and discharge of effluent), that govern lodge operations in this sensitive environment, through the implementation of "best practices management": to retain the respect and trust of the adjacent communities; to strive to reduce and to minimize the carbon footprint where and whenever possible Mayuni Conservancy is a community-managed conservation area of 15 000ha which was registered as a Conservancy in December 1999. The area extends from Kongola to 10km to the south, east and west of the C49. This conservancy is to empower local communities to manage and benefit from their natural resources. Losange Lodges has signed a JV with the Mayuni Conservancy and MAFWE TA to operate Bush Camp. What makes Bush Camp a sought-after overnight camping experience, is that the conservancy is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, and various bird species, making it a popular destination for eco-tourism and wildlife viewing. In addition, the Mayuni conservancy for the past 2 decades has played a crucial role in promoting sustainable development and conservation in Namibia. In place are the following documents: Memorandum of Agreement dated 18 August 2018: Mayuni Conservancy with Losange Lodges (Joint Venture) Management: Current Managing Directors are Mrs. Anke Schwalbenbach-Levin (as of 2017) and Mr. Michiel Levin (as of 2014). They are based at Camp Kwando and are overall responsible for the operation of Bush Camp as a tourist destination. However, the day-to-day management is carried out by Mr. Roxy Tembwe who is based at Bush Camp. The Proponent is hereby applying for an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) for Bush Camp in the Mayuni Conservancy including water abstraction and effluent discharge licenses.
