The shortage of land is so dire in Windhoek that residents erect informal structures on any piece land that they can lay their hands on. This has resulted in the proliferation of informal settlements on Erf 550, 1035, 1036 and 1037 respectively. City of Windhoek 2026. Environmental Impact Assessment for the proposed township establishment at Okatunda and Okandundu Windhoek, Khomas Region, Namibia.

The rapid population growth in Windhoek is placing increasing pressure on provision of housing and associated services, including, water, electricity, sewage, etc. This has resulted in the increase of informal settlements in the north western parts of Windhoek. People from other parts of the country are flocking to Windhoek in search of employment opportunities and better living conditions. This is hampering the attainment of the country’s developmental goals. Negative impacts of rapid urbanization include acute shortage of serviced land and housing and environmental degradation.
