Paterson was joined for part of his journey by Robert Jacob Gordon. They were at the mouth of the Orange River in August 1779, where they recorded ostriches, flamingoes, pelicans, ducks, wagtails and doves Their record of an ostrich nest with 34 eggs is probably the first Namibia land - bird breeding record.
