Title:
251127006749: Renewal of ECC for the existing Oranjemund Water Supply Scheme (Abstraction and Treatment)
Publication Year:
2026
Abstract:

The Oranjemund Town Council supplies freshwater to the town and surrounding areas with groundwater abstracted from 10 boreholes and 1 x Felhmann well located on the bank of Orange River. The water is pumped to the treatment plant consisting of central Swartkops reservoir from where is fed by gravitation to the town reservoirs, and further distributed to the town and Namdeb Mining Area 1 Reclamation Plant. The ORTC) was issued with a water abstraction permit by the department of water affairs to abstract a maximum of 22,000 m3/day (Water abstraction permit no:10862). Subsequently, the ORTC conducted an EIA and received an Environmental Clearance Certificate ((ECC01288), issued 2021-04-13 and expired on 2024-04-13. However, the title of the ECC only refers to the Water Abstraction activities and erroneously omitted the Water Treatment Part, although the two activities work simultaneously. In order to meet statutory requirements in line with the Environmental Management Act, 07 of 2007, and its Regulations of February 2012, the ORTC has appointed Green Gain Consultants cc to update the EMP and apply for the correction and renewal of the ECC.
