Exploration and small-scale mining/quarrying activities of base and rare metals by local communities in Kunene region plays a role in the regional economy. This application process for obtaining mining claims (MCs) for exploration and possibly small-scale mining/quarrying activities in the Kunene region involved several key steps and adherence to specific regulations. (i) Since MCs in Namibia are exclusively granted to Namibian natural persons (individuals) or companies that are majority-owned by Namibian citizens, Ayam Cenam Mining cc was first registered and is majority Namibian-owned. (iii) The company identified MCs near Onguta Village in the Opuwo Rural Constituency with the potential for base and rare metals. (iv) The MCs are already physically demarcated on the ground according to prescribed methods. (v) An application for the registration of the pegged mining claim was submitted to the Mining Commissioner at the Ministry of Mines and Energy within 21 days from the date of pegging. (vi) The critical steps to submit the completed "environmental questionnaire for MCs" and a "proforma environmental contract" to the MME official had been completed. (vii) Before registration of MCs, there is a need for approval of the Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT). It is for this reason that Ayam Cenam Mining cc would like to apply for the ECC.
