Salt of good quality has historically been mined at the Cape Cross salt pan since the early 1990s in the form of rock salt and re-crystallized salt. The Cape Cross salt mining area is located about 50km from Henties Bay within the Dorob National Park in Erongo Region. Since, 2009, Cape Cross Namib Investment (Pty) Ltd herein after referred to as proponent, obtained the mineral rights under Mining Licence (ML) 147 to operate Solar Salt mining operations from existing crystallizers (ponds). The latest Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC), ECC-01717 was granted on 2021-10-28 and expired on 2024-10-28. The proponent intends to continue with the salt mining operations subject to the relevant legislation requirements. In line with the Environmental Management Act, 07 of 2007, the proponent is required to renew the expired ECC. As such, the proponent has appointed Green Gain Consultants cc to update the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and apply for the new ECC to ensure the continued operations of salt mining activities on ML147.
