The town of Swakopmund is one of the towns in Namibia that is faced with severe housing crisis driven by continuous influx of people. The rapid urbanization and increase in informal settlements in the town highlight a significant need for affordable and decent housing. In response to this, the Municipality of Swakopmund has planned to establish new township developments for low, medium and high-density residential developments as well as for commercial developments (business and industrial). The proposed township development will be located on Portions 165, 166, 167, 168, 169, 170, 171, 172, 174, 175, 176, 176 and 181 of Farm Swakopmund Town and Townlands No.41. The portions lie north of Matutura township and sandwiched between the old Henties Bay Road and the new Henties Bay bypass (C34). Approval will be obtained from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development for the proposed subdivision and township layouts. In terms of the Environmental Management Act, No. 07 of 2007, and its Regulations (No. 03 of February 2012) the planned development will trigger certain listed activities that cannot be undertaken without an Environmental Impact Assessment study carried out.
