Abstract:

LISTED ACTIVITY ESIA SCREENING FINDING TOURISM DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES (6) The construction of resorts, lodges, hotels or other tourism and hospitality facilities. The Draaihoek lodge will be developed on farm Draaihoek No. 119, and will comprise of five (5) luxurious, exclusive, self-contained units (referred to as ‘’pods’’). These pods will be elevated on stilts and strategically positioned along the rocky mountainside. The two existing farmhouses will temporarily accommodate the construction team and will be demolished upon completion of the construction phase. Construction of a staff lodge and a lodge support facility that will serve as the core operational hub. ENERGY GENERATION, TRANSMISSION AND STORAGE ACTIVITIES 1. The construction of facilities for: (a) The generation of electricity; and (b) The transmission and supply of electricity. Diesel generators and photovoltaic (PV) solar panels will be used during the construction phase. Roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) solar panels will be installed to generate supplementary power for the lodge. The lodge will be fully self-sufficient and will not connect to any external power supply source. WATER RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT (8.1) The abstraction of ground or surface water for industrial or commercial purposes; and (8.6) Construction of industrial and domestic wastewater treatment plants and related pipeline systems. Approximately 10 m3 of water will be abstracted daily from existing boreholes during both the construction and operational phase. Borehole and abstraction licences, approved by the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) in terms of the Water Resources Management Act No. 11 of 2013 will be required. A trickling filter wastewater treatment plant will be constructed. A licence for this system will be required from the DWA in terms of the Water Resources Management Act No. 11 of 2013. WASTE MANAGEMENT, TREATMENT, HANDLING AND DISPOSAL ACTIVITIES (2.1) The construction of facilities for waste sites, treatment of waste and disposal of waste; and (2.3) The import, processing, use and recycling, temporary storage, transit or export of waste. Waste generated on-site, including construction waste, will be removed and disposed of at a municipal waste disposal site. Ablution facilities will be built. For effective wastewater management, a trickling filter wastewater treatment plant will be constructed. A licence will be required for this system in terms of the Water Resources Management Act No. 11 of 2013. OTHER ACTIVITIES (11.2) Construction of cemeteries, camping, leisure and recreation sites. The proposed Project is classified as a leisure and recreational development. The pods are high-end designs aimed at providing premium lodging experience for guests.
