The purpose of the earth electrode line and stations is to provide a current path when the 350 HVDC line is operated on earth mode. The 350 HVDC line may be operated under certain conditions in "earth return" mode. The 350 HVDC line may be operated under certain conditions in "earth return" return due to significant savings in power losses.

The ECC is for the Environmental Clearance Certificate for the operation and maintenance of an existing 66kV transmission Line from Omatako T-Off Substation to Omatako Base Substation including Omatako T-Off, Hochfeld, Omatako Booster, Ombotozu and Omatako Substations. The 66kv transmission line from Omatako T-Off substation to Omatako Base was constructed in 1984 prior to the commencement of the Environmental Management Act and its regulation, as a result there was no environmental impact assessment study conducted for the project prior to its development.
The Environmental Clearance Certificate is for the operation and maintenance of the existing 350kv Gerus - Zambezi Transmission Line Associated Infrastructures. In 2020 NamPower obtained the Environmental Clearance Certificate for the operation and maintenance of the 350kV Gerus - Zambezi High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line. NamPower would therefore like to apply for the renewal of the ECC for 350kV Gerus - Zambezi line and associated infrastructure in order to comply with the Environmental Management Act (Act 7 of 2007) and its regulations.
The Environmental Clearance certificate is for the construction and operation of the second (II) 400kV transmission line from Korkerboom substation near Keetmanshoop to Auas substation near Windhoek. Note: The updated EMP file is unfortunately corrupted. MET has been informed.
