Title:

Report of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, Trekkopje Desalination Project, Erongo Region, Namibia

Publication Year:
2008
Abstract:

The Trekkopje mine will require 20Mm3 of water per year, and various options were explored to provide this, including groundwater and surface water resources, as well as desalination. There are insufficient surface water or groundwater resources in the Erongo Region to provide the required volume, and thus desalination was determined to be the optimal solution for water provision to the project. This Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the desalination project has been undertaken as required under the Water Resources Management Act 24 of 2004 and the Environmental Assessment Policy of Namibia. This final draft of the EIA report includes where pertinent, responses to the comments received on the first draft, released in November 2007.
