Title:

Indigenous use of plants to treat malaria and associated symptoms

Publication Year:
2015
Abstract:

Malaria, an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, remains a public health concern in many sub-Saharan countries. In Namibia, malaria claimed over 100 lives in 2011 alone (WHO, 2012). However, Namibia achieved a remarkable reduction in the number of cases between 2000 and 2011 (WHO, 2012). The number of confirmed (out-and in-patient) cases decreased from 477,786 in 2000 to 133,464 in 2008 (MoHSS, 2010), and further to 3,163 cases in 2012. Moreover, malaria deaths have dropped tremendously from 679 in 2000 to 199 in 2008 (MoHSS, 2010), and further to 45 in 2011 and four in 2012.
