Title:

The Otjihipa Mountains Expedition: botanical exploration in Namibia: Kaokoveld centre of endemism

Publication Year:
2009
Abstract:

The wild and rugged Otjihipa Mountains in the remote far north-western corner of Namibia contain many rare plants and are part of the Kaokoveld Centre of Endemism, a focal point of many restricted-range plants and animals. The name Kaoko derives from the Herero word 'okaoko', which means 'the left arm' and refers to its position at the north-western extreme of Namibia. The impressive Otjihipa mountain range, formed mainly of quartzite and dolomite rock in the east and metamorphic granites in the west, is the second highest range in the Kaokoveld.
