Abstract:
The social and economic complications of a new hydroelectric scheme planned for Namibia's Epupa Falls for the surrounding Himba homelands are examined. The project would contribute to the country's self-sufficiency in energy production and help in its rapid development. Feasibility studies are being carried out by a consortium of companies from Norway, Sweden, Angola and Namibia. Economics of the scheme are examined. Alternatives to hydroelectric power are also considered.
