Title:
Distribution of Welwitschia mirabilis

Abstract:
A description and map are given of the localities where Welwitschia mirabilis has been collected in Africa. Principal localities are coastal sandy deserts in which rain may not precipitate for several years. Nightly fog or dew is present, possible sources of water for the life of the plant. Welwitschia was collected by the author in the Kaokoveld, a somewhat different environment. This new locality is a semi-desert about 100 miles inland, not subject to nightly fog or dew. It has a few inches of rain annually. Plants here are considerably smaller in size, but the reason for such size is not apparent. Other colonies of this species may be discovered in the as yet unexplored parts of the Koakoveld.
