Publication Year:
2008
Abstract:

Bannerman Mining Resources Namibia (Pty) Ltd (referred to hereafter as Bannerman) has contracted A. Speiser Environmental Consultants cc (ASEC) to conduct a Social and Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) including socio-economic and biophysical aspects for their proposed uranium mine at Anomaly A, Goanikontes, 40 km from Swakopmund. This scoping study is the first phase of the SEIA and aims to ensure that: a baseline database (biophysical and social) is established; negative environmental impacts of the proposed open pit uranium mine are identified early so that any further investigations can be carried out; and Interested and Affected Parties (IAPs) are identified to enable full public consultations to take place so that their needs and concerns are taken into consideration. Nine local environmental specialists have contributed to this scoping study, compiling biophysical and social data from desktop and field surveys on hydrogeology, climate and weather, vegetation, fauna, ecology, archaeology and socio-economic aspects.
