Abstract:

The Husab area has a complex geology, which has resulted in an area of variable, but low groundwater potential. Mineral exploration drilling and installation of water monitoring bores has identified some formations where limited water supplies can be obtained. Three different aquifer systems, all with relatively low supply potential, exist around the mine site: Saturated alluvium associated with major rivers (i.e. Khan and Swakop rivers). Saturated alluvium associated with the Husab plain. Fractured / weathered bedrock aquifers. The drilling into the bedrock on site has shown that highest inflows were encountered in alaskite zones and in areas of biotite schists. Inflow into future open pits is expected to occur predominantly along these zones.
