Title:

Namibia's Coast Chapter 3: Foundations and Landscapes

Publication Year:
2012
Abstract:

Coastlines are amongst the most dynamic landforms on earth. Located at the interface between the ocean and the land, the coast is constantly buffeted by wind, tides and waves, all of which have major influences on the coastline itself as well as the immediate hinterland. Attacked relentlessly by the swells rolling in from the South Atlantic, the Namibian coastline is one of the most energetic in the world. Sediment on the coast is moved on a daily basis, while sea levels are constantly changing over longer and shorter terms as a result of several factors. These include changes in atmospheric pressure, changes in the volume of the oceans, warming and expansion of the sea, and the physical uplift or subsidence of the continent.
