Public access to information is a vital component of ensuring community engagement in prevalent issues. Wildlife crime is one of the pressing environmental issues of our time.

Wildlife crime investigations are generally covert operations requiring utmost confidentiality to succeed. Investigations and prosecutions in complex cases may take months or even years to complete. For this reason, the information that can be released to the public without compromising cases is often limited. Nonetheless, the Namibian government strives to share as much information as possible with the public.

The Namibian media has welcomed this approach and regularly publishes statistics and feature articles on wildlife crime. These are entered into the database at regular intervals, creating a comprehensive archive of wildlife crime reporting in Namibia.

2020. National parks closed until early May - Anti-poaching activities to continue.

The country's national parks will be closed for the duration of the lockdown until 5 May in compliance with the state of emergency declared by the President in reaction to the COVID-19 outbreak. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism, spokesperson, Romeo Muyunda, in a statement last week said during the duration, tour operations and guiding activities will not be allowed in the national parks which also includes closure of accommodation establishments.

Parliament has recommended amendments to the Wildlife Act to provide protection for whistleblowers and ensure stiff penalties for those found in possession of cyanide, a dangerous chemical often used by poachers to poison elephants.

Towindo L 2020. Elephant poaching and illicit financial flows.

According to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), 322 elephants were killed by poachers between 2016 and 2019, largely for their tusks. These are then shipped out to Asia, via South Africa, but the real number may be much higher, according to wildlife groups. Much of the poaching occurs in northern Zimbabwe in game reserves straddling the border with Zambia, according to ZimParks, a statutory body responsible for managing the country’s wildlife population.

2020. Mit zwei Schildkröten verhaftet.

Die Polizei hat am Dienstagmittag einen 31-jährigen Einwohner von Usakos festgenommen, der im Besitz von zwei Schildkröten gewesen sei und über keine Genehmigung verfügt habe. Laut Erongo-Polizeisprecher wird Jason Hamunyela ein Verstoß gegen das Wildtiergesetz beziehungsweise der illegale Handel mit Wildtierprodukten vorgeworfen. Den Wert der Tiere beziffern die Behörden mit 20000 Namibia-Dollar. „Die Schildkröten wurden an Beamte des Ministeriums für Umwelt, Forstwirtschaft und Tourismus in Omaruru überreicht, wo sie sicher aufbewahrt werden“, erklärte der Polizeisprecher.

Die ministeries van die omgewing, bosbou en toerisme en veiligheid en sekuriteit het verlede week hul wildmisdaadverslag van 2019 uitgereik. Verlede jaar is 45 renosters gestroop teenoor 74 in 2018. In 2019 is ook meer verdagtes (112) in verband met renosterverwante misdaad as in 2018 (84) in hegtenis geneem. Die verslag is deur die Blue Rhino-taakspan onder leiding van komm. Muleya T 2020. Poacher shot dead In shootout.

A suspected poacher was killed while his accomplice escaped following a shootout with game rangers on Wednesday at Bubye Valley Conservancy, some 60km west of Beitbridge town. The two men allegedly killed a male lion, before rangers caught up with them while in the process of killing a black rhinoceros.

A man was promised 20,000 South African rand (about S$2,000) to unlawfully transport 11 pieces of rhinoceros horns from Johannesburg to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a district court heard on Wednesday (April 8).

Handel mit Wildtierprodukten: Behörden nehmen fünf Tatverdächtige in drei getrennten Fällen fest. Die Behörden haben am vergangenen Wochenende mehrere mutmaßliche Schmuggler mit illegalen Wildtierprodukten verhaftet. Das geht aus dem gestern in Windhoek veröffentlichten Polizeibericht hervor, der von fünf Festnahmen in drei getrennten Fällen berichtet. Es seien bei den Einsätzen insgesamt vier Schuppentier-Panzer, zwei Leopardenfelle und zwei Elefantenstoßzähne sichergestellt worden.

2020. Two arrested for possession of wildlife products at Rundu.

Two men age 33 and 39 were arrested here on Friday for being in possession of controlled wildlife products. The Namibian Police Force crime investigations coordinator for the Kavango East Region, Deputy Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu told Nampa on Monday the incident happened at around 21h00. Kanyetu said at the time of the arrest the two men were found in possession of two leopard skins and three pangolin skins.

Drie Angolese mans en 'n Namibiër is Saterdag glo met twee olifanttande en ietermagôprodukte in die Akati-nedersetting by Outapi vasgetrek.

Three Angolan men and a Namibian were reportedly apprehended in the Akati settlement at Outapi on Saturday with two elephant teeth and pangolin products.

2020. Botswana kills five suspected poachers in effort to save Rhinos.

Botswana has seen an unprecedented rise in rhinoceros poaching in the last 12 months. The government reports nearly 50 of the animals have been killed in the last 10 months, about one-tenth of the country’s rhino population. Officials say at this rate, the black rhino population, which numbers just a few dozen, could be wiped out by the end of next year.

Cape Town - An American citizen has been sentenced to two years in jail, suspended for five years, and further banned from the country for the illegal possession of indigenous plants. Kalman Kaminar was sentenced in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on two counts of illegal possession of succulent plants declared as protected.

Smit E 2020. 16 arrested for wildlife crimes.

Sixteen suspects have been arrested in recent days in connection with wildlife crimes and six new cases were registered. According to police statistics ten wildlife products were confiscated, and five firearms and one vehicle were seized. The wildlife products included four pieces of elephant ivory, a pangolin skin, two duiker carcasses, an impala carcass and a warthog carcass. On 5 March two Zambians, an Angolan and a Namibian were arrested at Kongola for illegally hunting protected game.

Namibia loses 9 rhinos, 1 elephant to poaching since January.

Namibia has lost nine rhinos and one elephant to poaching since the beginning of the year, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism said Monday. Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda said poaching took place inside private owned farms and the country's national parks, with the latest incident taking place last Friday when one elephant was poached. Two suspects have since been arrested.

The Namibia Police Force arrested and charged 16 suspects on charges of rhino or elephant poaching and conspiracy of elephant poaching last week. Police also confiscated five firearms, rounds of ammunitions and a motor vehicle. Among other items which were recovered during the anti-poaching operation  are;  varied wild life products  such as  four elephant tusks, a pangolin skin , two duiker carcasses, one waterbuck carcass and one warthog carcass.

In its efforts to boost the much-needed security at the conservancy, N≠a Jaqna conservancy management committee member Lara Diez said they have added 12 new guards to help curb poaching that of late has seen a rapid increase at the park. 2020. 16 Festnahmen wegen Wilderei.

Die Behörden haben in den vergangenen Tagen insgesamt 16 Personen wegen Verdachts auf Wilderei verhaftet. Einem aktuellen Bericht des Umweltministeriums zufolge wurden über diesen Zeitraum sechs neue Ermittlungen gestartet und allein in der vergangenen Woche unter anderem vier Elefantenstoßzähne und ein Schuppentier-Panzer sichergestellt. Das Elfenbein sei bei einem Einsatz am Dienstag vergangener Woche in Nkurenkuru konfisziert worden.

Maclennan S 2020. Poaching trial to resume in May.

The trial of six men facing rhino-poaching charges continued in the Grahamstown High Court this week. East London residents Francis Chitiyo, Trymore Chauke, Misheck Chauke, Simba Masinge and Nhamo Muyambo, and  Abraham Moyane were arrested in July 2018 during Operation Full Moon – the Eastern Cape Rhino Task Team’s code name for its anti-poaching operations. All six have since been in custody. They are accused on four counts.
