United States Ambassador to Namibia John Giordano has called for a stronger law-enforcement focus on the transnational criminal networks behind rhino poaching, saying efforts must extend beyond arresting poachers to identifying traffickers, following the money and disrupting illegal overseas markets. Giordano made the remarks after concluding a three-day field mission in Namibia focused on the country’s efforts to combat wildlife trafficking, including frontline rhino protection, investigations, prosecutions and international cooperation. "Rhinos are not being slaughtered simply because poachers happen upon them. They are being killed because transnational criminal organisations can make enormous amounts of money supplying illegal overseas markets," Giordano said.
