Abstract:

The increasing proliferation of native encroacher bush species is evident, although the underlying drivers of their expansion remain unclear. This study assessed the soil properties in sites dominated by Senegalia mellifera, Dichrostachys cinerea and Terminalia sericea in the Kalahari Sands Plateau of Namibia. Four soil samples (0โ€“30 cmdepth) were collected per plot and composited for laboratory analysis, while temperature and moisture measurements were recorded in situ. The results showed differences in soil chemical properties between sites dominated by different encroacher bush species, while sodium remained constant. Although chemical properties varied across the farms, soil moisture and temperature remained uniform. Soil texture also differed across sites dominated by encroacher bush species, while clay remained uniform. The soil texture differed across the three farms. The study found no uniform pattern in soils from sites dominated by different encroacher species, although Terminalia sericea-dominated sites had the poorest soil quality. It is therefore recommended to consider soil properties and dominant woody species in specific areas when assessing the impacts of woody species on rangeland ecosystems, as they influence herbaceous species composition.
