Abstract:

Namibia's Dzoti Conservancy has achieved remarkable success in wildlife conservation, with most game populations healthier today than at any time in the past 150 years. The conservation model in Namibia, which includes effective conservation hunting, has been a key factor in this success. Conservation Hunting: This approach allows for the sustainable use of wildlife resources by local communities, generating income for conservation activities and rural communities. It is different from trophy shooting, which is typically carried out in fenced areas where introduced species offer easy targets. Community Involvement: The communities in Dzoti Conservancy decide how to use their land and resources, including whether to form a conservancy or create a hunting concession. Wildlife Recovery: The conservation efforts have led to a recovery of wildlife populations, with elephants tripling since the mid-1990s, black rhinos having one of the healthiest populations, and the white rhino being reintroduced after local extinction. Livestock Management: The integration of livestock production with wildlife management in Dzoti Conservancy has been successful, allowing for multiple land uses, including tourism and hunting, while minimizing conflicts. These successes highlight the importance of community involvement, sustainable hunting practices, and effective wildlife management in Namibia's conservation efforts.
