Public access to information is a vital component of ensuring community engagement in prevalent issues. Wildlife crime is one of the pressing environmental issues of our time.

Wildlife crime investigations are generally covert operations requiring utmost confidentiality to succeed. Investigations and prosecutions in complex cases may take months or even years to complete. For this reason, the information that can be released to the public without compromising cases is often limited. Nonetheless, the Namibian government strives to share as much information as possible with the public.

The Namibian media has welcomed this approach and regularly publishes statistics and feature articles on wildlife crime. These are entered into the database at regular intervals, creating a comprehensive archive of wildlife crime reporting in Namibia.

2025. ZimParks calls for cancellation of Sinamatella mining application to protect wildlife habitat.
The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has urged the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development to cancel Sunny Yi Feng’s application to prospect for coal in the Sinamatella area of Hwange National Park. ZimParks argues that the area is a critical habitat for the endangered black rhino.

A disturbing poaching incident has shaken the conservation community in Victoria Falls, with a lion found brutally killed and mutilated. Advertisement According to a statement released by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), a team from the Vic Falls Wildlife Trust was tracking a collared lion when they stumbled upon a gruesome scene. The poached lion’s flesh had been removed, and its claws and head were missing. However, in a heartening turn of events, a second lion, an adult male, was found caught in a snare but still alive.

2022. Poachers kill, de-horn black rhino.

Poachers recently killed and de-horned a black rhinoceros at Chipinge Safari Camp. ZRP spokesperson in Manicaland Province, Inspector Nobert Muzondo, confirmed the incident to The Manica Post saying the decomposing carcass of the black rhinoceros was found on 12 October. He said: Poachers sneaked into Chipinge Safari Camp armed with unknown rifles. They proceeded to one of the water points along the Chidimayi River on the safari where they shot and killed a black rhinoceros.
