Transboundary species project - background study - Wetland grazers
This study has been interesting in that the acute problems of the wetland grazers are very different to those affecting buffalo, roan, sable and tsessebe. Their extremely restricted habitats coincide exactly with the areas most desired for human settlement, agriculture and cattle grazing. Conservation of reedbuck, waterbuck, lechwe and puku outside protected areas appears an almost intractable problem unless radical new co-management institutions can be developed.
