Abstract:

Jürgen Michael Riegel, 68, who was arrested in Swakopmund last week for allegedly detaining a lizard and a turtle at his home without the necessary permits, will remain in custody until his official bail hearing on August 11. Riegel, a German citizen with permanent residence in Namibia, is facing charges under the Nature Conservation Ordinance for the detention of wildlife species without a permit and for the "inability to provide a satisfactory explanation of possession". According to police, the lizard was found in a wardrobe inside the house, while the leopard tortoise was discovered in the yard. The reptiles have been confiscated and are currently being held in a "safe place," police said. Riegel made his first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court last Friday. Bail was denied after the state argued that he had a potential propensity to commit similar offences and could pose a flight risk. He returned to court today for plea purposes, but instead chose to schedule a formal bail application, which was then set for August 11. Riegel is represented by Alfred Ellis of Ellis Attorneys in Swakopmund.
