The conservation areas of Ûibasen, Twyfelfontein and Doro ! Nawas strongly denies allegations of widespread support for the Goantagab tin mine at Khorixas. This follows allegations in local media reports that the local community supports the mining operations in the Sorris Sorris Conservation Area. "The claim that Ultimate Safaris independently opposes the mine is incorrect. Opposition to the mine is a joint effort by the conservation areas of Ûibasen Twyfelfontein and Doro ! Nawas, the ≠Aodoman Traditional Authority and Ultimate Safaris, which appealed to the High Court," said a media statement from Ûibasen Twyfelfontein. "The claim of widespread support for the mine is misleading. The majority of our members are opposed to mining in areas of high-value tourism and wildlife." The conservation area points the finger at the impact of mining on tourism and wildlife and believes the Environmental Impact Assessment and the Office of the Environment Commissioner have failed to adequately address the effects of mining in sensitive areas on wildlife and the tourism operations that depend on that wildlife. "Evidence from the Huab conservation area shows that mining operations have displaced rhino populations, as well as destroyed tourism, resulting in job and income losses. "No mining company within our conservation area has fulfilled promises, which contradict allegations of coexistence."
