Title:

Wild plants for a sustainable future - 110 multipurpose species

Publication Year:
2019
Abstract:

This book is one of the main dissemination achievements of the UPP and the result of a large collaborative effort working with international partners and rural communities. It is aimed at practitioners from governmental institutions and NGOs, working in Africa and Latin America. It aims to promote the conservation and sustainable use of wild multipurpose species in conservation, agriculture and forestry projects addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdgs). The book includes five chapters, one for each project country, featuring a total of 110 technical species profiles (20 species per country, except for 30 species in Kenya). These species were identified and selected for the UPP as being among the most important useful plants for the rural communities. Most of them are trees and/ or shrubs (85 in total), with the rest being cacti (six species for Mexico), subshrubs or perennial or annual herbs. For Botswana, a species of truffle, a fungus, is also included. The overall habit of all the species included in the book is summarised in the Annex. The profiles have been compiled by experts in each country in collaboration with those at RBG Kew.
