Title:

APP-003586: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the installation and operation of the five camouflage telecommunication towers within the Municipality of Swakopmund, Erongo Region

Publication Year:
2022
Abstract:

The proposed project involves conducting an EIA for the installation and operation of five camouflage telecommunication (lattice) towers within the municipal land of Swakopmund for the purpose of providing internet connectivity in Swakopmund. The lifespan of the camouflage telecommunication towers is estimated to be 20 to 30 years, thereafter it will be decommissioned or upgraded. The total area required at each site is about 100 square meters, and the proponent is in possession of an approved sub-lease agreement from the municipality after following all the required procedures to sub-lease the allocated parcel of land within the intended neighbourhoods as they appear zoned for the purpose in the municipal layout plan. The towers will be connected to the landing station in Swakopmund which is part of Google’s upcoming Equiano sea cable. The construction of the landing station was completed last year, in June 2021. The internet fitting which includes power, cabling cabinet, conduit, raceways, cages and security have also been completed. The proposed project will provide an alternative service to Namibia and the rest of the SADC region. This will ensure network stability which is imperative to business and consumers across the region.
