Title:

APP-003223: Renewal of Environmental Clearance Certificate - for exploration activities on EPL3308 for base, rare and precious metals, nuclear fuel and industrial minerals in the Erongo Region, Namibia

Publication Year:
2021
Abstract:

Renewal of environmental clearance certificate – for exploration activities on EPL3308 for Base, Rare and Precious Metals, Nuclear Fuel, and Industrial Minerals, in the Erongo Region, Namibia. Listed activity EIA screening finding mining and quarrying activities (3.1) The construction of facilities for any process or activities which requires a licence, right or other form of authorisation, and the renewal of a licence, right or other form of authorisation, in terms of the Minerals (Prospecting and Mining Act), 1992. (3.2) Other forms of mining or extraction of any natural resources whether regulated by law or not. (3.3) Resource extraction, manipulation, conservation, and related activities: An environmental clearance certificate is being renewed in order to continue the exploration for base and rare metals, industrial minerals, nuclear fuel minerals and precious metals on EPL 3308; Minerals (e.g. soil), will be sampled within selected target areas within the EPL boundaries. Water resource development (8.1) The abstraction of ground or surface water for industrial or commercial purposes: Due to the drilling activities, ground and surface water will need to be abstracted, or sourced. 2. Details of the activity(s) covered by the environmental clearance certificate: Title of Activity: Exploration activities on EPL 3308 for base and rare metals, industrial minerals, nuclear fuel and precious metals: Geophysical Surveys (Airborne electromagnetic survey, ground HLEM surveys, etc): Geochemical Analysis (Resample high U intervals in trenches using 1m channels/composites); Geological (construct geological map of mile 72 tenement and validate and verify chips from Metals Australia drilling); Drilling (RC drilling programme). Nature of Activity: The project is for the exploration of base and rare metals, industrial minerals, nuclear fuel and precious metals. The approved and existing Environmental Management Plan (EMP) will still be relevant for the renewal application for an environmental clearance certificate for EPL 3308, since there is no change in the approved activities. The project was granted an environmental approval by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) valid for a period of three (3) years on the 23rd of November 2018. Scale and Scope of Activity: The proponent wishes to continue with exploration activities within the boundaries of EPL 3308. The location of the project area is illustrated in Figure 1. The exploration activities are generally low-impact and non-intrusive. The following are envisaged during the project: Preliminary field inspection of onsite geology (non-invasive); Ground exploration activities may include soil and geochemical sampling, geophysical surveys, geological mapping and drilling;  Investment in exploring the mineral potential of the Erongo Region; and employment creation.
