Biogeography and systematics of South African Lepismatidae (Thysanura, Insecta: II: The Central Nama Karoo Biome: material and methods
Seven genera (Afrolepisma, Ctenolepisma, Monachina, Psammolepisma, Silvestrella, Thermobia and Xenolepisma) and 22 species of Lepismatidae are recorded from Central South Africa. Of these, ten species represent new records for the region, while four Ctenolepisma species are newly descriptionbed, including one which is the first known from the genus for which myrmecophyly has been confirmed by repeated sampling. Significant range extentions are recorded for many species. A previously un utilised character is documented for Ctenolepisma. Biogeographical analysis confirms the validity of recognised biotic boundaries in the area. The isolated presence, in the eastern Kareeberge, of fauna with Succulent Karoo Biome affinities is noted and explained.
