Abstract:
Contributions to the history and protohistory of the Topnaar strandloper settlement at the Kuiseb river mouth near Walvis Bay. Sandwich Harbour is a big lagoon some 30 km south of Walvis Bay, bordered in the east by very high dunes and sheltered from the sea by an alluvial spit of land which sometimes closes completely, then again is removed by exceptionally high tides. One of the most interesting chapters of South African prehistory is the Later Stone Age of the coast and especially its latest stage, when prehistory, protohistory and history meet, so that we are not only concerned with stone implements and potsherds but with people of flesh and blood whose life we are able to reconstruct to a certain degree. Keywords: Namibia, Namib Desert, Kuiseb River, desert archaeology, anthropology, history.
