In early 1998 the Namibia-Finland Forestry Programme was supported by the Fire Ecology Research Group which in the same year established the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC). One of the main aims of the GFMC is to facilitate countries, the UN system and other international organizations, including NGOs, in developing fire science programmes, technology transfer to fire management and policy development .
