Abstract:
The large differences in diet between the two species described in the previous chapter are reflected in comparably large differences in foraging and feeding behaviour. The brown hyaena is a solitary forager, investigating a wide variety of potential food sources and usually feeding on its own (Mills 1978a), whereas the spotted hyaena tends to concentrate on large and medium-sized mammals, most of which are consumed with conspecifics.
