Title:

Attempts to reintroduce African wild dogs Lycaon pictus into Etosha National Park, Namibia

Publication Year:
1995
Abstract:

Three attempts were made to reintroduce African wild dogs Lycaon pictus into Etosha National Park, Namibia. These attempts failed because the packs were released under suboptimal circumstances in areas with low prey densities, the dogs were inexperienced hunters as pups were reared in captivity, and the dogs were vulnerable to predation by lions. Four wild dogs died from rabies. Prey killed by wild dogs included springbok Antidorcas marsupialis, Burchell's zebra Equus burchelli and springhare Pedetes capensis. Keywords: African wild dog, rabies, reintroduction.
