Most modern histories of Namibia that attempt to cover both the German and South African periods of occupation tend to focus either on the history of resistance or colonial politics, especially "native" policies. Giorgio Miescher, while addressing aspects of both resistance and government policy, uses the history of an internal border to create a unifying, coherent, and multifaceted account of Namibia from 1896 to the 1960s. For him, "the history of the Red Line … is essentially the history of the delineation and enforcement of a combined settlement and veterinary border". Thus, he "reconstructs the formation of this border ... and analyzes the impact of this progression on Namibian history and society".
