Title:
240731004504: Environmental Clearance Certificate for the continued operation of the existing fuel consumer installations at Meatco Okapuka Tannery and Feedlot in Windhoek, Khomas Region
Publication Year:
2024
Abstract:

Meatco’s Okapuka Tannery, situated 25 km north of Windhoek, has been operational since 1987. This tannery currently employs 38 people and utilizes an advanced automated process that requires minimal human intervention to transform fresh and salted hides into wet-blue leather. Wet-blue leather is produced by curing hides in chromium salts, a method that results in durable, flexible, and long-lasting leather products. The tannery source hides from various locations across Namibia, including Meatco and other local abattoirs. Once processed, these hides are supplied to local entities like NAKARA and exported to international markets in Italy and China (Annual report 2017). The leather industry in Namibia is intrinsically linked to Meatco’s Okapuka Tannery. This industry thrives as a by-product of the livestock sector, producing a range of goods including wet-blue leather, shoes, and exotic leather products. Wet-blue leather represents the initial stage of leather processing and is crucial for the global leather industry, with bovine hides being the primary raw material. In Namibia, the economic contribution of wet-blue leather to the GDP surpasses that of locally produced value-added leather products, highlighting its significance as a standalone product. This economic impact underscores the importance of the tannery and its role in both the local and international leather markets. In addition to its economic contributions, the tannery also plays a role in promoting sustainable practices within the leather industry. By utilizing modern automation and efficient processing techniques, the tannery reduces waste and minimizes environmental impact. This commitment to sustainability aligns with global trends in the leather industry, where there is an increasing focus on eco-friendly and socially responsible production methods. The company also operates a feedlot that is able to handle 500-600 cattle a day. As part of its operations the company purchases and stores fuel on site for various uses such as diesel for vehicles and machinery both for the tannery and feedlot as well as HFO for the Boiler used in processing. The fuel is sourced from ENGEN Namibia (Pty) Ltd. ENGEN Namibia (Pty) Ltd as a leading marketer of liquid fuels and lubricants in the country aims to ensure that all their clients and facilities are compliant with the relevant environmental and industry legislation. It is against this background that Engen has appointed Environam Consultants Trading (ETC) to apply for an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) for the consumer installations on this site on their behalf.
