Abstract:

49-year-old Leon Schiffer appeared in the Maltahöhe Magistrate's Court on Monday. He is charged with poaching in the Namib-Naukluft National Park (in the Sesriem district). According to last weekend's police report, Schiffer was arrested on January 5 at around 10am along with another suspect, 32 – according to information from the magistrate's office in Maltahöhe, it was a certain "Gariseb". The two reportedly stripped nine roe deer. However, they were allegedly part of a group of four suspects who allegedly illegally entered the national park in a Nissan NP300 rental car off the C19 main road, about 30 kilometres from Sesriem. The C19 is the dirt road leading from Solitaire to Hammerstein and Zaris Pass back to Maltahöhe. The suspects reportedly hunted and shot the game with the vehicle, after which the meat was loaded onto a truck. Two suspects fled.
