Biological control of Salvinia molesta in Eastern Caprivi - Progress Report: 1980 - 1995
Salvinia molesta Mitchell, or Kariba Weed, has caused an infestation in the Eastern Caprivi wetlands since the early 1970's. Several attempts to control the weed followed during the 1970's. Aerial spraying of herbicides proved too expensive and the introduction of Paulinia acuminata and Cyrtobagous singularis was of limited success. The Department of Water Atfairs took on the task of controlling the weed in 1980. This report deals with studies on the extent of the problem, local growth rates of the plant, the different control methods considered, the bioiogical control pro-qramme, the financial implications and the present situation.
