Publication Year:
2021
Abstract:

Title of Activity: Exploration activities for base and rare metals, industrial minerals and precious metals, in the Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia Listed Activities: Forestry activities (4) The clearance of forest areas, deforestation, aforestation, timber harvesting or any other related activity that requires authorisation in term of the Forest Act, 2001 (Act No. 12 of 2001) or any other law. Mining and quarrying activitieis (3.1) The construction of facilities for any process or activities which requires a licence, right or other form of authorisation, and the renewal of a licence, right or other form of authorisation, in terms of the Minerals (Prospecting and Mining Act), 1992. (3.2) Other forms of mining or extraction of any natural resources whether regulated by law or not. (3.3) Resource extraction, manipulation, conservation, and related activities. Water resource development (8.1) The abstraction of ground or surface water for industrial or commercial purposes Nature of Activity: The project is for the exploration of base and rare metals, industrial minerals and precious metals. An Environmental Scoping Report (ESR) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) were submitted to Ministry of Environment Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) in December 2017 to support the application for an environmental clearance certificate for EPL 6521. The project was granted an environmental approval by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) valid for a period of three (3) years on the 22nd of March 2018. Scale and Scope of Activity: The proponent wishes to continue with exploration activities within the boundaries of EPL 6521. The location of the project area is illustrated in FIGURE 1. The exploration activities are generally low-impact and non-intrusive. The activities maybe scaled up depending on exploration findings. The following are envisaged during the project. Preliminary field inspection of onsite geology (non-invasive); Potential creation of access tracks, where existing tracks cannot be utilized; Limited vegetation clearing for the creation of tracks, and survey access; Ground exploration activities may include soil and geochemical sampling, geophysical surveys, geological mapping and drilling; Investment in exploring the mineral potential of the Otjozondjupa Region; and Employment creation.
