Abstract:

Title of Activity: Proposed mechanized bush thinning operations on Farm Gai Kaisa No 159 in the Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia. Nature of Activity: The project involves bush thinning operations to support rangeland reclamation and to supply material for the charcoal production plant on Farm Gai-Kaisa No.159 in the Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia. Scale and Scope of Activity: The project involves bush thinning operations on invader bush species on Farm Gai-Kaisa No.159 to support rangeland reclamation and management efforts. Additionally, this is one component of a larger scale charcoal production project with the primary objectives being sustainability and profitability through implementation of mechanized processes in an environmentally acceptable way. The secondary objectives are to reclaim rangeland and improve the agricultural potential of site areas. The project involves the following activities: - Bush thinning of encroacher species on farm Gai Kaisa No. 159 using semi-mechanized techniques, - Transportation of thinned out biomass to the charcoal production plant, and - Establishment of a biomass stockpile storage area. Listed activities forestry activities (4) The clearance of forest areas, deforestation, aforestation, timber harvesting, or any other related activity that requires authorization in term of the Forest Act, 2001 (Act No. 12 of 2001) or any other law. The Bush thinning of encroached rangeland to support project activities. Hazardousnsubstance treatment, handling and storage (9.1) The manufacturing, storage, handling, or processing of a hazardous substance defined in the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, 1974. It is planned that 14000 liters of diesel will be stored on site.
