The discussion on the role of local institutions in natural resource management is a recurrent theme in southern Africa. These institutions play a significant role in sustainable development, particularly in poverty alleviation, empowerment of the rural population, and natural resource management. They are important custodians of indigenous knowledge systems and culture, and also intermediaries between the Government and the communities.
