Title:

The south African insects described by Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828)

Publication Year:
1991
Abstract:

C.P. Thunberg collected insect specimens in the interior of Southern Africa in 1772-1775. A large part of this collection was donated to the Zoological Museum of the University of Uppsala, Sweden, where it is still preserved separately. Thunberg published 47 papers and dissertations which contain names and descriptions of 933 insects stated to occur in South Africa. These publications and all species are listed. It shows that Thunberg made an important contribution to entomology which has been underrated due to the rarity of his works and the brevity of his new descriptions.
