A Mass Poisoning of White-Backed and Lappet-Faced Vultures in Gonarezhou National Park
In this article we report a mass poisoning of vultures in the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe. This was one of the largest mass killings of vultures ever recorded and the largest recorded in Zimbabwe. On many of the carcasses the upper beaks were removed, suggesting the involvement of superstition and/or traditional medicine practices. The reasons for, and consequences of, such vulture harvesting are discussed.
