Diamantornis wardi nov gen, nov sp, giant extinct bird from Roilepel, lower Miocene, Namibia
Numerous fossil eggshells recovered from lower Miocene sand dunes at Roilepel reveal the presence of a hitherto unknown genus of giant bird on the African continent. The eggs are as large (16 × 13.3 cm) as those of the extant ostrich, Struthio camelus, but their macro and microstructure, especially of the megapores (or pore complexes) are unique in the avian class. Mammals associated with the eggshells indicate that the strata from which they come are of lower Miocene age.
