This paper is a desk-study review of the movements of waterbirds within Africa, drawing on published references, African Waterbird Census (AfWC) data analyses and observations. We illustrate some intra-African migratory strategies and behaviours, and use these to formulate recommendations for conservation purposes and, in particular, improved implementation of the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) in Africa.
