Abstract:
Whilst climbing to the summit, a single adult male Malachite Sunbird Nectarinia famosa was observed at approximately 10h20, feeding from the flowers of the Hedgehog Aloe Aloe erinacae. Many other succulents were also in flower. This is one of few records for Namibia, and a slight northern extension to the species' range as documented by SABAP. Also present on the upper slopes of the Aurusberg were Dusky Sunbird Nectarinia fusca, Palewinged Starling Onychognathus nabouroup, and Chat Flycatcher Melaenornis infuscatus. (The date is significant as SABAP presented evidence that the Malachite Sunbird moves into western regions during winter, including the month of September, and is relatively uncommon in the west in summer -Ed.)
