Conservation thinking during the last decade has advanced dramatically from the conservative approaches developed during the preceding century. The new ideas embrace scientific, economic and social concepts with their roots in fields as diverse as the development of ecological research, the emergence of independent African states and the awakening of environmental consciousness throughout the world.
