The newsletter was initially established as a publication of the IUCN SSC ASG International Giraffe Working Group (IGWG) in 2006 under the name Giraffa. With publication of Volume 7, Issue 2 2013, the name of the newsletter has changed to Giraffid, the official newsletter of the IUCN SSC Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group (GOSG), which was established in May 2013. The aims and objectives have remained the same, as has the numbering of published issues.
