The seven known species of Comicus, five of which are new, are descriptionbed and their distributions mapped. The Schizodactylidae is considered to be a monophyletic unit, with Comicus being an apomorphic derivative of Schizodactylus. A cladogram for Comicus species is provided, and their evolution is discussed in relation to the evolution of the psammophilous western southern African faunal component.
