Abstract:

A large amount of material comprising more than a thousand specimens of the coleopterous family Scydmaenidae was identified recently. In agreement with the high ecological diversity of the country, this material provided a large number of hitherto undescribed species of the family. These all belong to four genera: Chevrolatia (1: endroedyi), Scydmaenus (2: umfolozii, endroedyi), Oneila (2: luciae, transkeiana), and Euconnus (48: insolitus, outenikwensis, paraoblongiformis, edeni, hawequasensis, sibylleanus, saintlucianus, swellendamensis, blyderiveranus, langebergensis, langebergi, blydepoorti, natalensis, paranatalensis, dwarsbergensis, dwesanus, harkervillensis, gardenofedeni, springbokensis, blyderiveri, mariepskopensis, breytenbachae, boesmani, mariepskopianus, mariepskopi, koornhuisenses, pseudosabiensis, paralangebergi, springboki, paraklassenkopensis, dwarsbergeanus, minutissimus, outenikwai, swellendami, capensiformis, harkervillei, cederbergensis, abachausi, helderfonteini, pusillimus, dwesaensis, transkeiensis, grootdrifensis, mariepskopicus, sebastiani, conformis, nquaduanus, transvaalicus). It would be too early at this stage to attempt any biogeographical evaluation. The discovery of a new species of the genus Chevrolatia is, however, noteworthy. This is the first record from the southern hemisphere of a predominantly holarctic genus hitherto represented south of Mediterranean North Africa by a single species from Ethiopia. Keywords: Coleoptera, Chevrolatia, Scydmaenidae, Ant-like stone beetles, New species.
