Le désert du Namib central
On both sides of the Kuiseb Valley, the Namib coastal desert, which is less known than the chiloperuvian desert, shows a strong contrast between the southern erg which is made up of three dune systems (barchan; linear and star dunes), the age of which, while increasing eastwards, is regarded as Pleistocene, and a northern reg the coarse debris of which suffer active salt weathering and eolian corrasion. This desert, which could be the oldest in the world, presents a great number of typical processes, formations and forms under a "humid" and non-pluvial climate which is more dependent of the structure of the maritime Trades than of the Benguela cold current. Keywords: Namibia, Namib Desert, Kuiseb Valley, Benguela Current, dune systems, salt weathering, eolian corrasion, age, climate.
